Where is Eglin Air Force Base? - About Valparaiso, Florida

Eglin Air Force Base is located about three miles southwest of Valparaiso, Florida in Okaloosa County. 
Valparaiso, named after the Chilean city of Valparaiso, is a city on the western tip of Florida next to the Gulf of Mexico with a population of slightly over 5,000. Just to the east of Valparaiso is the city of Niceville which is slightly larger with a population over 12,000. The region receives annual precipitation of between 25 to 60 inches per year and has warm, subtropical climate that lasts longer than the average summer. The area around Eglin Air Force Base contains over 50 threatened species including sea turtles and woodpeckers. Interestingly, Eglin Air Force Base is also one of the launch sites for NASA civil rockets. According to the 2000 census, about 2,300 families live on the base.

History of Eglin Air Force Base

Originally called the Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base and later named after Lieutenant Colonel Frederick I Eglin who died in an aircraft crash, Eglin Air Force Base was established in 1933 from the creation of the Valparaiso Airport. When World War Two broke out in Europe, Eglin Air Force Base was used as a proving ground for aircraft and at its height employed more than 16,000 enlisted personnel and civilians. After the war, Eglin Air Force Base continued to pioneer techniques for missile launching and handling and the creation of pilot-less aircraft and drones. Eglin Air Force Base is now the home of the Air Force Test Center and plans, directs and conducts test and evaluation of U.S. and allied air armament, navigation and guidance systems, and command and control systems and supports the largest single base mobility commitment in the Air Force. Eglin employs approximately 15,000 military and civilian personal on the 463,128 acre base.

Schools in Valparaiso, FL

With bus transportation on and off base, there is a large network of schools in the Eglin Air Force Base area for children to attend. The area has pre-school, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools along with private (religious and secular) schools and schools for gifted children. Oak Hill and Cherokee Elementary Schools are located on Eglin main in the base housing area and Addie R. Lewis Middle School is located just outside the East Gate. Clifford Meigs Middle School is about 1.5 miles from the West Gate. Older students may attend either Niceville or Choctawhatchee High Schools. There are many colleges in the area including the University of West Florida, Troy University Eglin and Northwest Florida State University.

Eglin Air Force Base is close to Fred Gannon Rock Bayou State Park as well as several beaches. As for arts and culture, the Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida is located in Valparaiso. In Valparaiso, residents can enjoy a variety of activities from swimming, boating, hiking, or playing sports. Each one of the numerous parks are family-friendly and always well-maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department.

  1. The white sand beaches are amazing... it's called the Emerald Coast because the water is a beautiful emerald color, which contrasts perfectly with the quartz sand.
